天生一头红发的曼娜·苏瓦丽1979年生于美国罗德岛，父亲是一位精神病学家，母亲是一位护士，她有三个哥哥，她的名字是由她埃及教母所取。她自幼想成为考古学家或是医生，但12岁被一家模特中介机构慧眼相中，并从此成为一名模特。随她家搬到加州后，她在南加州查尔斯通一所女校读了初中，从加州波班克一所天主高中毕业。
米娜抵达洛杉矶后，立刻开始了电视生涯，先是拍广告，然后在《淘小子看世界》(Boy Meets World)、《急诊室的故事》(ER)、《Chicago Hope》等电视剧中担任客串。1997年她进入电影圈，在《玩转堕落街》(Nowhere)和《惊唇劫》(Kiss the Girls)两部影片中扮演小人物，此后又出演了《比佛利山超级警探》(Slums of Beverly Hills)、《邪气逼人2》(The Rage: Carrie 2)。1999年的《美国派》是她演艺生涯的一个转折点，接下来的《美国丽人》引起了更多关注，她扮演的啦啦队长，性感而脆弱，为她赢得英国学院奖提名和更多片约。事业正值黄金阶段，米娜却跑去和摄影师男友罗伯特·布林克曼(Robert Brinkmann)秘密完婚，外界指出两人的年龄相差了16岁之多，她却毫不为意，可能因为她的双亲也相差了20岁的原因。
